NYC’s Fashion Tribute: The Button & Needle

In this city of high fashion and low wages, the needle and the button can be found everywhere. This sculpture by artist David Shrigley honors the workers who sew our clothes and the city that is the epicenter of the fashion industry. The sculpture is located in the heart of the Garment District in New York City.

The sculpture

Is located at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 39th Street, just off Madison Avenue.

The Garment District area is now home to many cultural institutions, a thriving arts community, and a diverse population. The Alliance has also developed a strong reputation for being a place where people can work and live in a clean, safe and vibrant environment.

Big Button

was commissioned in 1987 by the Seattle Department of Transportation to mark the entrance to the city’s first major roundabout. In a little more than 25 years, it has become an icon for the city and one of its most popular attractions.

The work is a tribute to the men and women who have been making clothing for the American public since the beginning of time. It is meant to remind people of the importance of the clothing industry. It’s also a reminder of how far we’ve come as a society.
